Business Majors
I don't have a degree of any kind. I do have a bit of college but it doesn't amount to a bunch. Eventually I would like to go back, but more because I want the education than anything. I have been running restaurants for 21 years and quite a bit of the math that we use comes quite naturally to me. Even back in my early twenties when I first started doing this I was able to figure out my numbers, costs, read profit and loss statement and other tools that are common in my business. One of the things I have been noticing over the last few years is the lack of basics in our management. I train managers, or at least I did when I only ran one store and over the last few years we have been really pushing to recruit college graduates. Why is it that all of these folks that have supposedly gone to school, many of them business majors, just don't understand the concept of a P%L and most of them have a hard time coming up with our cost percentages? I don't know if it's an example of poor education or if we are just not recruiting the right people but the problem is really getting to the point where we are going to have to do something to fix it..
